No Communication with ABS Module

ABS DIAGNOSTICS

No Communication with ABS Module

When your diagnostic tool cannot communicate with the ABS module, the issue is usually related to power supply, CAN communication or module failure. Understanding the root causes helps you diagnose the problem quickly and avoid unnecessary replacements.

STEP 1

Start with Basic ABS Communication Checks

When there is no communication with the ABS module, the most common causes are related to power supply, ground or simple wiring faults.

These checks should always be done first, as they often reveal the problem quickly without advanced diagnostics.

No power supply to ABS module
Blown ABS fuse or faulty relay
Poor or missing ground connection
Low battery voltage affecting communication
ABS module power and fuse diagnostics
STEP 2

Check CAN Communication to the ABS Module

If power and ground are correct, the next step is to verify communication between the ABS module and the CAN network.

01

Measure CAN Resistance

Check between CAN High and CAN Low. Around 60 ohms indicates a healthy network.

02

Check CAN Voltage Signals

With ignition ON, both lines should show fluctuating voltage around 2.5V.

03

Inspect Wiring to ABS Module

Look for damaged wires, corrosion or loose connectors.

04

Check OBD Communication

Ensure the diagnostic port has proper CAN connection to the ABS network.

STEP 3

Isolate the ABS Module or Network Fault

If power and CAN communication are correct, the issue may be caused by the ABS module itself or another module affecting the network.

A faulty module can block communication for the entire CAN system.

Disconnect ABS module and recheck communication
Check if CAN network returns to normal (60 ohm)
Look for water damage or corrosion in ABS unit
Inspect ABS connector pins and wiring
Consider ABS module failure if all tests pass
